Beachlands_logoBeachlands Beachlands School is locatedĀ south east of Auckland, New Zealand andĀ is a very unique school in the way that it strongly focused on making sure we can deliver the best possible education within the resources it has at its disposal. The Beachlands Community is very supportive and teachers work closely with parents to help make sure education is meaningful and fun for the children.

We have a strong focus each year on student achievement and we set targets for the students to achieve in the areas of numeracy and literacy. We also aim to build the social and emotional skills of the children through a range of strategies base upon our values surrounding FERN (Friendship, Encouragement, Respect and Nurture). It is important that all children are able to demonstrate these values in order to create an effective learning and collaborative community in each class.

Schools Project - Beachlands School

Beach_clean_up_015webOn Friday 26th of March the Kowhai Team at Beachlands School, New Zealand undertook a beach clean up from Pine Harbour to Motukaraka Island (Year 3 and 4), and around Sunkist Bay Beach (Year 1 and 2). A similar clean up was undertaken in 2008.

In February speakers came from Tangaroa Blue Ocean Care Society to help create an awareness of the danger of marine debris in our local waters and involve us in the marine debris project. Bags were provided to collect the rubbish from the WWF and Tangaroa Blue, and disposable gloves from the Manukua City Council.

Students, parents and teachers spent the morning walking to and from the clean up areas. Students had great fun finding and putting debris into the bags which were taken to a collection point at the Puriri Rd Reserve and at Sunkist Bay Beach. The bags of rubbish were collected by a contractor and bought back to school for sorting and counting.

The bags of rubbish at each collection point seemed enormous. Collectively when bought back to school the task of sorting and counting for the afternoon seemed horrendous. Our two loads of rubbish had turned into a mini mountain! What a task to sort and count. Photo top: Parents and students at the Sunkist Bay.
