Oakura School is a decile 10 full primary situated 12km from New Plymouth city on the North Island of New Zealand. The roll is approximately 275 children. The majority of the children live in Oakura with a few children travelling from rural areas by bus.

Our students have an active lifestyle. Their interests are closely related to the environment of the Oakura community, with the beach and the mountain being a major focus. The students are committed to skiing and water sports, especially body boarding and surfing. Most of the children are fully involved with the Oakura Junior Sports Club. This club offers a wide range of sports including cricket, soccer, netball, basketball, mini-ball and junior athletics. There is also a strong pony club operating in the district to which a number of our pupils belong.

Oakura School plays a significant role in providing a social meeting place and community facilities such as the School/Community Library, the tennis courts and Plunket rooms.

On the 19th February, 250 students from Oakura School joined their teachers, mother helpers and Tangaroa Blue Ocean Care Society New Zealand members for a beach clean up at their local Oakura Beach.

Armed with sunhats, gloves and Tangaroa Blue recycling bags the volunteers collected 2463 pieces of marine debris weighing 250kg from the beach all before 1pm!

The haul included 97 plastic bottles, 150 glass bottles, 578 broken pieces of glass, 100m of fishing line, 5 animal syringes, 200 cigarette butts.

After the clean up the students all met up at Corbett Park for a much deserved swim in the river and a sausage sizzle.

After a photo with the Taranaki Daily Newspaper the rubbish was sorted, collated, bagged and everything that could be recycled was taken to the local Recycling Centre.

Well done to everyone at Oakura School! Your efforts are helping to keep our beaches tidya and oceans clean! More photos below.
