Everyone can help! Grab a bag and pair of gloves and adopt your local stretch of coastline. Volunteers are invited to send in data on what they are collecting. This data will be used in research projects and reports which helps give us a true indication of the state of your local ocean!
Global Projects - Adopt A Beach Project

We’ve created some tools to help out with the organisation of a clean up and the identification of marine debris.

If you’d like to register a local site or area and contribute data to the Marine Debris Project, please email the following information to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

- Name; address; contact email/phone; the name and location of the site you'd like to register; how many volunteers you'd like to register.

When choosing a site to register, consider the following: roped_in_low

  1. Pick a beach or stretch of coastline that is convenient for you to visit regularly.
  2. Do you need permission to access the site from the relevant authority?
  3. Make a plan to have the debris removed. Contact you local council.
  4. Check the local conditions e.g. high/low tide, temperature and weather.
  5. Remember your safety is paramount, you should take reasonable steps to avoid or minimise any potential risks.
  6. Identify hazards (i.e. cliff edges, large waves, slippery rocks). Make sure your health and fitness will enable you to participate in clean ups – if you’re unsure check with your doctor.
  7. Use protective clothing i.e. gloves and shoes etc and protect from the weather using sunscreen, jackets and keep well hydrated.
  8. Equipment that you’ll need is a pair of tongs and heavy duty gloves and a sharp’s container to remove sharp objects.
  9. Contact your local council if you find any objects that are hazardous or are too heavy to move.
  10. Check the debris that you have found in the Marine Debris Identification Manual.
  11. Download the Marine Debris Collection Datasheets and enter the items that you have found into the datasheet.
  12. We would be happy to receive your data to help with our marine debris research, if you would like to submit your completed datasheet and any photos that you have taken of the clean up or rubbish collected, please email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
